Soundiron Rust 4 WAV
Rust 4 is the largest and most detailed entry in our classic Rust series, capturing an expansive world of metallic percussion and melodic textures. For this volume, we traveled to the East Contra Costa Historical Society’s agricultural museum in Knightsen, California—a site preserving over 150 years of local history in a small farming community on the edge of the San Francisco Bay Delta. The museum’s team generously gave us full access to their massive collection of artifacts, letting us record everything with extraordinary depth and detail.
Armed with custom, studio-grade field recording rigs—including large-diaphragm mid-side pairs and stereo contact mics—we explored the multi-acre museum grounds to capture every sound with pristine clarity. We performed ball, stick, felt, and metal mallet percussion on dozens of farm tools and machines: vintage plows, harvesters, horse-drawn equipment, early tractors, and even the full interior and exterior of an old railroad caboose. We also recorded a 40-foot windmill from every angle imaginable, along with a wide range of pioneer-era household items built from brass, copper, steel, tin, bronze, and wrought or cast iron.
We dug into every corner of the site to uncover unique tones—deep booms, eerie creaks, metal clanks, resonant rings, rhythmic ratchets, gongs, scrapes, and countless other textures in both indoor and outdoor spaces. From there, we curated and shaped the recordings into a massive set of playable instruments and sound effects, organized into tunable percussion kits by object, tone, and character.
